January bankruptcies mixed across region

DENVER — Colorado bankruptcy filings increased 9% in January, but filings were mixed in the Boulder Valley and Northern Colorado.

That’s according to a BizWest analysis of U.S. Bankruptcy Court data. Numbers cited include all new filings, including open, closed and dismissed cases. Data may differ slightly from official bankruptcy statistics..

Colorado recorded 614 filings in January, up 9% from 563 a year ago. Individual filings totaled 594 in January, up from 553 a year ago, but business filings doubled, from 10 in January 2025 to 20 this year.

In the Boulder Valley and Northern Colorado, filings increased in Boulder and Weld counties but declined in Broomfield and Larimer.

  • Boulder County recorded 22 bankruptcy filings in January, up 10% from 20 in the same month the prior year. Boulder County recorded 23 bankruptcy filings in December. 
  • The City and County of Broomfield recorded four bankruptcy filings in January, down from 13 in the same period in 2025. Broomfield recorded seven bankruptcy filings in December.
  • Larimer County filings totaled 27 in January, down 33% from 40 the prior year. Larimer recorded 34 bankruptcy filings in December.
  • Weld County bankruptcy filings totaled 58 in January, up 14% from 51 the same month a year ago. Weld recorded 61 bankruptcy filings in December.
