Colorado bankruptcies increase 6% in December

DENVER — Colorado bankruptcies increased 6% in December compared with the same period a year ago, but overall filings in 2022 declined 18.9% from 2021.

That’s according to a BizWest analysis of U.S. Bankruptcy Court data. Numbers cited include all new filings, including open, closed and dismissed cases. Colorado recorded 400 bankruptcy filings in December, compared with 377 in December 2021.

The state recorded 5,092 bankruptcy filings last year, compared with 6,281 in 2021.

Among counties in the Boulder Valley and Northern Colorado:

• Boulder County recorded 13 bankruptcy filings in December, compared with 9 in December 2021. The county recorded 174 filings in 2022, down from 222 in 2021, down 21.6%. Boulder County recorded 16 bankruptcy filings in November 2022.
• Broomfield recorded three bankruptcy filings in December, the same as recorded in December 2021. 2022 filings totaled 75, compared with 72 a year ago, up 4%. Broomfield recorded eight bankruptcy filings in November 2022.
• Larimer County filings totaled 25 in December, compared with 17 a year ago. Filings in 2022 totaled 292, compared with 312 in 2021, a drop of 6.4%. Larimer County recorded 27 bankruptcy filings in November 2022.
• Weld County bankruptcy filings totaled 24 in December, down from 28 recorded a year ago, a decrease of 14.2%. Filings in 2022 totaled 408, compared with 446 a year ago, down 8.5%. Weld County recorded 39 bankruptcy filings in November 2022.
